Long Overdue

Well…… It would be an understatement to say that I’m a little ashamed that I haven’t been able to release the promised version of WP Hive in so many months. Of course, I could name plethora of  reasons for this. But, when it all comes down to it, I can whole-heartedly agree that a new version should have been released a long time ago. So, with much determination, I  WILL be releasing a new version. It will not be the big 1.0 version (even though it is well in the works). It will be a interim version dubbed v0.5, and will address the few of the big issues that users have requested: Support for Sub-directory sites (the single most requested feature) Fixes for auto-adding multiple and/or similar domains & subdomains Fixes for Favicon handling w/ PHP 4 I am finding more time for coding recently, so in accordance with my optimism and if everything goes as planned, you can expect to see this within a few weeks (as opposed to months). Since we’re clearing the air, I should also address the forthcoming WordPress / WPMU merge. For those you who haven’t heard yet, Auttomatic (the organization behind WordPress) has announced that WordPress and WPMU will be merged into a single codebase at some time in the future. There is some speculation as to when / how this will be done, but with this now on the table, it is clear that WP Hive’s days are numbered. However, in the meantime, I see no reason why development should not continue on this project.  Until a suitable replacement is included in the core product, WP Hive will remain a viable solution to running multiple blogs with a single installation of WordPress. This, I believe, is all the more reason to support WP Hive. I can’t stress this enough. Financial donations are excellent. Contributions from developers, writers, testers, promoters, etc… are just as good.  I can assure you that this is the most effective way to speed up development. On a similar note, I am seriously looking for corporate sponsorship. If you are part of an organization that would like to attach your name to this project, or potentially anything else that I can develop in the future, please contact me! There are a hundred different ways that we could put together a win/win/win association. I am open to options and am just looking for an entity that I can work with to make it happen. Finally, developers or anyone interested in knowing the intimate details / progress of WP Hive development should join the WP Hive Developer’s Group, where you can provide input and gain insight on the future of this project. Thanks again for using and supporting WP...

Version 1.0 Update

At long last, I can definitively say that the next version of WP Hive is coming soon! Development of version 1.0 has been very steady and I expect the beta version will be released in the next few weeks. The feature enhancements included in the upcoming version are: Support for a multiple blogs as subdirectories (eg: domain.com/blog1, domain.com/blog2) An administration console, with options to manually add and remove blogs from the hive, among other options Ability to define which blogs have administrative rights for the hive Better handling of wp-hive plugin installation, activation, and deactivation; with “single click installation” (eg: no need to manually copy db.php) Better handling of special files & rewrites (eg: robots.txt, etc..) Support for most WP-Config definitions, which will allow: Multi language support (each blog can be a different language) Sharing user tables across multiple blogs Additional customization possibilities Fully rewritten and cleaned up code with more-efficient algorithms A robust API to allow simple development of features and add-ons A host of other enhancements While I can’t guarantee everything here will make it into the release, I am certainly going to try. It will all depend on how testing goes. Development is definitely under way and I would ask that you please consider supporting the development of this new version of WP Hive, particularly if you are using it, or plan to use it, for commercial purposes. All contributions, large or small, are most gratefully...

Installation Services

And now for some great news! WP Hive is free, and so is the support I’m providing through the forum. I’m happy to continue providing this service at no cost as time permits. However, I’ve noticed that many people who use this plugin sometimes require a little extra help with the installation. So, to this end I am now offering my services to install WP Hive.  By utilizing my services, you will not only have a worry-free installation of WP Hive, but you will also be supporting the development and contributing to the positive future of this plugin. Services: Clean installation for the first domain, plus additional domains. Installation on existing sites, database migration if necessary. Other services as required. Installation will be for the released version of WP Hive only. Send an email to me at ikailo@wp-hive.com to get...

Trac Server?

I’m looking to set up a Trac repository to assist in the development of this project, similarly to the WordPress Development Trac.  Unfortunately, it requires a lot of components that I don’t currently have installed on my sever, and I don’t have the resources or bandwidth to learn and install it all myself. Just throwing it out there and wondering if anyone has an existing Trac installation that they would like to contribute to this project? Alternatively, I’d be interested to talk to anyone willing to donate their time to set it up on my server. Please contact me at ikailo@wp-hive.com if you think you can...

Open Call for Developers

WP Hive is an open source project intended to simplify the administration of multiple WordPress sites running off a single install.  As with many open source project, it is pushed forward by those who have the time to contribute and the means to support it. Believe it or not, WP Hive is not the only thing I am working on. I have a more-than-full-time job, a consultancy business on the side, a family, and am working on an education part-time. On top of that, I am trying to build features into this project and offer support at the same time. All in all, it makes for a very busy person, and unfortunately, many things are being pushed to the backburner. So, to be honest, I am looking for someone (or some people) to assist in moving this project forward.  Someone who believes in this project and understands its potential. Someone who has just a little extra time to contribute a peice of code here or there. Someone who can write, provide assistance, or otherwise provide support for the ongoing development of this project. If YOU are that person, please contact me! Consider this: There is a huge market for WP Hive. A significant percentage of WordPress administrators manage multiple sites and have a real need for a tool like this. The market for providing WordPress Consultancy services is increasing. More and more small businesses are offering WordPress Install services, as well as WordPress as a CMS. Small Businesses owners are also looking for simple ways to help their clients, and WP Hive can help. This site already gets a lot of traffic with very little marketing or effort. I’ve even received unsolicited requests for development (paid) of a more robust version WP Hive. Unfortunately, I just can’t get to doing it with all the extra stuff that I have going on. There appears to be a great energy around this product.  I definitely want to keep it moving, but I need your assistance  As I’ve mentioned before (on my donate page), anyone who supports this project will receive proper recognition on this site. And who knows, maybe this opportunity could turn into a lot more?? So, if you like what you’ve seen with this project so far and have been thinking about helping out, then there is no better time to do so than right now! Please contact me at ikailo@wp-hive.com for more...
