I'm running Wordpress 2.9. I installed wp-hive according to your directions.

When I click edit and/ or add site and complete the required fields, example below:

domain - mysite.com
sub directory - /P365
Prefix - wp_365

I click on save changes and either get a message that the site has been saved or a message that there was an error saving.
If I get the message that my site has been saved and I click on the "install site" button, it simply redirects me to the site I'm hoping to add.

When I go back to the wp-hive in my dashboard, click settings, click edit - it still says "install site" next to the site that I'm trying to add.

Is this what the program is supposed to do? Is there a place where I can go to add posts to the new site? Can someone help me to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!
Please advise.

Has anyone using WP Hive addressed the problem of operating two related blogs that share a single search? I have tried implementing a custom Google search, the best advice given so far, has been frustrating to say the least. I have been directed back toward giving up on WP Hive, which I do not want to do. I wonder if this search issue will be addressed in the upcoming Pro build? If so, I think I can hang tight and wait and then pay then . . . be happy.

After placing the wp-hive folder into the plugins directory, the wp-admin page "was not found" (410 error). The page comes back after I delete the folder. Any thoughts on this?

I can still view the main blog page. I do have a Movable Type blog installed on there now (my first blog software) but am trying to switch over to WP.

Through trial and error and reinstall I figured it out. I am happy to report that ithacatype.com/main and ithacatype.com/news exist. I also see a third site name, plain old ithacatype.com with the table prefix wp_. I'm not managing three blogs, just the two: main & news. Can I delete that third one safely? I am wary to do so as the plugin is working great finally.
Also, quick question. One can be logged into a single admin panel at a time, correct?

Thanks for the query. These are about as clear a set of instructions I have found to implement this plugin. I am guessing the new version is what I should wait for as the current version available through the plugin dashboard keeps breaking my login. True? Is this the case? Please advise.

Update

actually the sites do not have the same name
it just looks that way!
When the hive sites are not installed correctly the program defaults to the main site.
I have tried this by setting up folders on my FTP program prior to loading the plugin and also setting up folders in Cpanel but it never works. Each time I press the install button I go to the main site never to the install panel.
I wish it would work but after three days of trying its back to my HTML hive (cave)

This is really difficult to understand. I'm going to use few words and perhaps try to get to the bottom of this.

citysite.com = Main site (with wp-hive installed)
(at my host [1and1], it is in a Home Directory which means wordpress is installed in /CitySite). So when I type the domain, it takes me to the domain.

I have other domain names that I would like add:

cityalumni.com
cityshipping.com
cityfirst.com

At my host I can make it a Home Directory, which means if you type cityalumni.com it goes to that site or I can forward it using a "Frame redirect" or an "HTTP redirect."

Ideally, my domain cityalumni.com would install somewhere like citysite.com/cityalumni - does this make sense?

If true:

1. How do I "add" the new site?

Domain Name:
Sub Directory:
Prefix:

Is it:

Domain Name: cityalumni.com
Sub Directory: /cityalumni
Prefix: alumni_ (or wp2_)

Is that correct?

2. Where do I point the domain to?

Does it point to /NewarkSite, newarksite.com, or something else?

Thank you.

This seems to be an Ideal application for me. I need to set up one main site with links to many smaller sites.

Installed on mydomain.com

want to create: mydomain.com/siteA
mydomain.com/siteB
mydomain.com/siteC
mydomain.com/siteD etc.

In the 3 boxes I put mydomain.com
/siteA
sA_

The sites all load with the same name and I cant get access to change the title in "all in one seo"
The dashboard only gives access to the root blog.
I dont care if the themes are all the same but I need to be able to change the title, keywords etc
I am sure that I have done something incorrectly.
Thanks for your help

I'm having trouble again. I had to change which domain name was the main one, so I'm setting up the hive all over again. I got one site to work, and then tried to add a subfolder, but got a blank page. I figured this was because it was a subfolder, so I removed both from the hive and they worked again separate from the hive.

Since then, every blog I try to add to the hive redirects to a blank page. I did exactly the same thing for the other domains as what worked for the one I removed. I've done it more than one time with more than one domain and every time wp-hive recognizes the blog, but when I click on "view site" or put the address in the address bar, I get a blank page.

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

1. I will assume you are using subdomain configuration. Each site is considered to be a separate site, and they do not link to eachother.

2. No, the Hive must share a database. WP Hive works by using different prefixes for each site, within the same database.

I am very interested in making all of my site updates easier but not at the expense of my SEO efforts. I use separate IP addresses with different nameservers for each of my sites. My questions/concerns are:

1.) Does using WP Hive link all of my sites that would be visible to the search engines (via ip, directories, etc.)

2.) I would prefer to use separate databases because many of my sites are already up and running. Is it easy to just have WP Hive handle the plugins and WP updates without touching those databases?

Looks like you've done everything right so far.

This issue is most likely because of an incorrect prefix. Check the database to see if a new set of tables were installed. Don't forget the "_" if your prefix has one.

Hello! I'm doing my best to get the plugin installed and working. I already have 10 existing wp blogs that I want to manage using wp-hive. I picked one to be the main blog and activated wp-hive on it. I got the tables from the second blog merged with the first, so that now they are in the same database. So far, so good. Then, I pointed my second domain name at the folder that was the root domain for the first blog.

Then, I went to add the second domain through wp-hive. Using the existing domain name, path, and the prefix already in use (for the existing blog), I entered all the info.

Then, it asked me to install the blog. I've already got it installed and running, so I figured I should skip this. But, when I typed the domain name in my browser I was taken to a wp install page. I went back through wp-hive and hit "install blog" thinking that it would "activate" the blog through wp-hive. But, it installed a new blog. Which, when I type the domain name in, now takes me to this this "new" blog. Not to the one that already existed under that prefix in the database.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

a little domain clarification may help me. there is a main site = domain.com

the main site recently added a section called = newsection ( which is promoted as an sister site )

when i click on the newsection link the url that comes up = newsection.domain.com

i like this format better than the / typically used in sub-directories. with what little i've given, can you tell me what is going on with this site and can hive offer a url format like this ?

If your sites are currently in a subdirectory configuration, I would at least suggest you wait until the next version.

Restructuring your sites from this configuration may be a little tricky.

Also, if you have access to a test environment, I suggest you try that before making any changes to a production site.

Yes, what you are talking about is possible and not too difficult. This post talks about separating a single site from the Hive.

Peter,

If you are planning to do a subdirectory setup, I suggest you wait for the next release.

ok, very good. thanks for clarifying that.

a couple additional questions, if you don't mind: if you set up a multisite DB, is it possible to separate out an individual site to create a standalone DB for one or more of the sites? if so, how hard is that to do?

for instance, say if i wanted to migrate the site to another platform (e.g., Drupal) or if i wanted to sell one site, but not the others?

if that isn't possible, is there a way to set up multiple DBs using the same WP code base?

any thoughts would be appreciated. thank you for your time.

ohh, I can't believe I'm so dumb, the option disappeared because I deleted the "about" page. 5 years of using wordpress and I have never done that before, ah well. you live and learn.

thanks ikailo.

My hive is currently on the Media Temple grid server and I've been a little frustrated with how slowly my pages load. This is true with all the sites hosted on that account, a few of which are not on the hive, so it's an (mt) issue.

Just thinking of other options to get my pages going a little faster and I want my hive to go with me if I move.
