Is there a way to use the same theme across a number of sites but have something site specific in it?

For example, each site needs to use a different account in the code for google-analytics and adsense.

With the v0.6.0, it's now possible to get a working subdirectory install. So I know that domain.com/blog 1 will work. Would it also be possible to do domain.com/blog 1 and domain.com/blog1/blog2?

I ask because I have one instance where the original blog was not installed in the root, then I added a second blog one level below that. Now I'd like to run them off of one install. If the above scenario is possible, then I'll go the trouble of installing a blog in the root to be the "main" hive blog. If not, I'll just keep it on two installs the way it is.

Thanks!

any chance of steering me in the right direction, please?

Me again. Well, so far I've tried Quick Cache, WP Super Cache, HyperCache, and I even went a different direction and tried DB cache. They all give me the same result - the hive sub-sites start showing the top site. I've tried deleting the cache folder each time so I know it's not "saving" a prior set.

So, what do I need to do to get caching working? Is there something I should look at? (I really need this because these sites are starting to get hit hard, and I don't want to mess around with moving servers).

Wow, this was really scary. I have a mini-hive of some article directory sites (using the article directory plugin). Since that plugin is pretty database intensive, I was testing out caching solutions to speed it up a bit. QuickCache seemed to work ok, but then I ran across the W3 Cache plugin (supposedly endorsed by some big time bloggers). I installed it and suddenly all of the hive'd sites were just resolving to the top hive domain. Turned out the W3 Cache plugin DEACTIVATED the wp-hive plugin - every time I tried it.

So, why would it do that? That seems so strange.

Now, what I've noticed the last couple of sites I have installed is that the "install site" link in the Hive's dashboard does not work. I have to always use install.php appended to the new site domain to get it started. Is that intentional, or a bug?

Hi,

I've managed to setup W3 Total Cache (which is great caching plugin) for sites running on WP Hive. Maybe someone someday will find it usefull so there's the whole story on my blog: http://tech.barszcz.info/2010/08/30/wp-hive-w3-total-cache/

One important note though: this solution will only work for setups with sites installed on subdomains. I think it'll not work for sites in subdirectories.

I hope it will be helpful for somebody.

I installed wp-hive installed, after discovering the Wordpress 3.0 multi-site network has a majo problem in that it will not allow anyone but the super admin from adding video embed code to a post. The code is stripped, and efforts to modify user capabilities via User Role Editor plugin are futile. Sinec I am administering a video sharing site, Wordpress 3.0 networking had to go.

So I've installed wp-hive and installed a second site on a sub-domain where I have installed BuddyPress.

Now I want to sync users. I see that this was comparatively easy for separate installation, at least in WP2.9. See Justin Tadlock http://justintadlock.com/archives/2008/09/20/installing-two-wordpress-blogs-with-the-same-users .

But Justin Tadlock's simple method wont work with wp-hive because there is no separate wp-config.php file for the second blog for me to edit.

Might it be possible to modify the wp-hive code to effectively do what Justin Tadlock's additional code does when iserted in config.php for the second blog?

Here it is:

Blog B’s table prefix should be different. We’ll change it to something like this in Blog B’s wp-config.php file:

$table_prefix = 'blogb_';
In the same file, find this line:

/* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */
Just above it, add:

define('CUSTOM_USER_TABLE', 'wp_users');
define('CUSTOM_USER_META_TABLE', 'wp_usermeta');

I am not a php code writer, and it would take me way too much time to learn enough to figure it out. What I want is to use the user tables from the first installation in ALL wp-hive blogs.

Since I'm still in development and there isn't much on the site, I'd be willing to test out a code modification if someone who does know php can tell me how to go about a modification.

I have installed my 1st blog.If the domain of the blog is blog.A.com and the prefix is 'wp_'.
now I use wp-hive to install a 2rd blog.
I filled the blank as follows:
Domain Name: blog.A.com
Sub Directory: /B
Prefix: 'b_'

when I visit blog.A.com/B, it opens the installation page "http://blog.A/wp-admin/install.php".I filled the blanks and press 'OK'.Then it turned to another page said that "You have already installed a blog.If you want to install a new blog, please delete the information in the database".

It's OK for me to use one or more database. But I don't know how to install several blogs with just one WP.Could anyone teach me how to do?

Hi!
I have doscovered a few plugins do not work as expected, especially in subsites:

these include
RB Internal Links
Dagon Design Sitemap Generator

The issue is that only top-level pages (ie. pages in the top-level site) are recognized...

RB Internal Links, when activated in a subsite, doesn't dispay any pages/posts etc. at the level of the subsite, but only those at the top. This add lots of time to my workflow, as I need 3-4 steps, window openings etc, instead of 1.

Similarly for Dagon.

Any ideas?

I have a hive set up on my shared hosting account right now - all my domains share the same IP address. There are currently 8 blogs on my hive.

I'm seriously considering upgrading to a reseller account and giving each site its own unique IP for performance reasons.

Will my hive be able to make that transition will me? Or will I be able to recreate my hive?

It took me some time to figure out how to get the hives set up. I used SSH to point my sites to the master hive site via terminal.

I'm not exactly sure how I'd point them if they're not on a shared hosting account but rather have their own individual IP. I am assuming I could do this, though...

So can I migrate my hive from a shared hosting to dedicated IP's... and any tips if so?

I know this is a free project so I do no expect anything more than what the developer is willing to give.

I always keep my site up to date as I believe it is important to do so. So if I start using WPHive I do not want to be left behind when a new version of worpress is released. I really rather not decide between hive and a wordpress update.

So my question is how quickly (in general) is Hive update if the current version does not work with the new version of WP?

I struggled for ages with WPMU to get it working so that I could host around 10 sites on one application.. Problem was WPMU needs you to install without the "www" in your domain - and this means you can;t have any of your domains displaying the www. prefix. I managed to get round this by modifying the domain mapping plugin to show the complete domainn with the http://www...

Then I discovered WP Hive and it is working great for me on 2 domains.

Now I have just been experimenting with WordPress version 3.0 (merged with WPMU) and it is working great BUT with the same limitation as mentioned above - you have to modify the domain-mapping plugin to get the www. domains to display. Then if you remove the www. it does not find the domain. I tried modifying the htaccess but could not make it work.

So I then decided to try WP Hive plugin on the 3.0 beta and it activates fine but when you click on the WP Hive in the admin area there is nothing displaying.

I think the users wanting to use WP Hive want it to manage multiple sites and probably want the flexibility to have www or non-www domains. However this so far does not seem to be possible with the WP 3.0.

So I think there is a place for using WP Hive for people like me. I think WP 3.0 is with network sites is more for people who want to use a WPMU style blog.

Hello,

I installed a WP blog a few weeks ago. I have 2 domains from godaddy.com and I wanted to make 2 separate blogs on each domain, but same content. I did some researches and seemed like WP hive might work for me, so I installed it to my blog 1.

I tried to add sites on WP hive and wasn't sure if I did it correct, so I deleted both sites that were added to WP hive. When I deleted the blog 1, the whole admin pages crushed... I was getting error messages and couldn't even log in to my blog dashboard. So, I went back to godaddy FTP and used the snapshot program and restored the blog folder of 2 days ago. Just in case, I deleted the WP hive from my site. And it seemed like everything went back to normal, except for 1 thing...

My websites' index pages has a link to my each blog. Website 1 is linking to blog 1 and Website 2 is linking to blog 2. After the crush, when I click on the link to blog 2 on website 2, it goes to blog 1. On website 1, the link works fine and goes to blog 1.

No matter what I tried, I can't figure out how to link correctly. On Dreamweaver, the link is linking to blog 2, but on the web, it goes to blog 1.

So I am thinking WP hive has changed some code of something on my database even though I deleted the program.

On the documentation page, it says when uninstalling, you have to delete wphive config file, etc, but I don't know where they are...

I am not a computer expert, so if you could give me easily comprehensive answer, I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

I've installed hive on an existing WP installation, pointed a new domain at my site and added it to the hive console using mynewdomain.com and /mynewdomain.com as the directory and given it a unique db prefix but then when I click 'Install new site' I get redirected to http://<rejected-by-urlscan>/?~/mynewdomain.com

OK, so I created a new hive. Did everything as I have in the past, but when I try to activate a new domain I get

"Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

I have the top domain activated. I have the new site directed at the hive domain. Everything looks good, bit I get that message.

I also noticed - when I go into the hive's edit page and try to change any of the domain names or prefixes, I get this error message

"There was an error saving the site."

What should I try? This hosting account has another hive defined that is working fine.

Hello,

I'm new here and I'm searching for a good (but not necessarily free) plugin or script to install and manage WordPress on many domains (Multi-Domain/Multi-Site).

As I know, WP MU (and the upcoming WP 3.0) is primarely not for Multi-Domain but only for Multi-Users so it's no successor for WP Hive and the like.

I already tested:
- Virtual Multiblog for WordPress
- WP_OneInstall
- WP Hive free

All are free and quite good working. But all lacks some really significant features.

Therefore I think about buying one of the better scripts. WP Hive Pro costs $50 PER YEAR which is not very cheap. I don't hesitate to buy one but I have to know if WP Hive Pro will really have continuous development.

Yes, there is a nice Feature Roadmap but without any time frame. Will it take days or week, months or years?

How is the future of WP Hive Pro?

Thanks.

I have four blogs set up through WP Hive. Three of them work fine; the fourth is giving me trouble.

My default Wordpress installation is at mydomain.com/blog. That's the blog that's giving me trouble. When I tried logging into the Dashboard, I got a Wordpress message stating the database needed to be upgraded and it could take several minutes. I clicked on the upgrade button and the upgrade was accomplished quickly.

I tried logging in anew at mydomain.com/blog/wp-admin. I can see from the URL that a redirect happened because something told the browser to go instead to mydomain.com/wp-admin, and that URL in turn displays a redirect to the URL I entered in the first place, mydomain.com/blog/wp-admin. Weird.

The browser also displayed this message:

Not Found

The requested URL /wp-login.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.12 mod_fastcgi/2.4.6 Phusion_Passenger/2.2.5 Server at carlospedraza.net Port 80

---
This is the URL that's displayed in the Address Bar:

http://carlospedraza.net/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3a%2f%2fcarlospedraza.net%2fblog%2fwp-admin%2f

While this is the URL that I entered:
http://carlospedraza.net/blog/wp-admin

I'm not sure if this is a WP Hive issue or simply a Wordpress issue, since this particular blog is the one created initially by my Wordpress installation, which is itself a redirect from carlospedraza.net to carlospedraza.net/blog.

I'd appreciate any advice or assistance.

Regards,
/carlos

I'm new to WP-Hive. Tried v0.5.2 with WordPress 2.9.2, discovered it won't work because I think I need subdirectory support. De-installed, installed v0.6.0 RC1. Still not getting it to work.

The original blog is website.com/blog. What I want is a new website.com/blog2. I've tried all the obvious derivations, none work. One derivation broke access to wp-admin and the blog, got Unknown Host. Fixed Unknown Host by editing the wphive_hosts table, the original site entry, from website.com/blog back to website.com. (Note the installation defaults the original site to website.com, not website.com/blog where the blog really is.)

Trying to install website.com/blog2 generates a 403, forbidden, error. The blog2 directory has 777 permissions set.

What's the right incantation to get this to work?
