I add a new site under /whatever ( in the root is the existing blog)
I then click the "install site" option
I fill in the details and press "install wordpress"

    It gives me "Already Installed
You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first."

How can i get this to work

ok... this seems to be because i can not use a subdir under my normal wordpress installation. so i tried a subdomain, this works.

now however i get "unknown host" on the subdir screen.

the "unknown host" disappeared when I added a subdir with the subdomain name and then deleted it the directory. somehow that left an entry somewhere.

(note that my primary domain is a different one than the domain the hive enabled blog is running on, on a shared hosting account).

What did you put for the value of the prefix?
Do you have a root site installed and working?

You should have something like this:
    'domain.com' '/' AND
    'domain.com' '/dir' OR
    'sub.domain.com' '/'

I am sorry for my late response.

so on http://example.com I have a running wordpress

    I filled in:
    --------------------------------
    Domain Name: example.com
    Sub Directory: /mytopic
    Prefix: whatever_wp
    --------------------------------

I think it is because on example.com/mytopic already the categories of the example.com site are supposed to be. So not a complete new WordPress site?

You should avoid duplicating URLs by having a topic and a subdirectory site with the same name.

Also, you should generally always have a root site for any subdirectory directory site. If you are creating a subdirectory site, create the root site first.

    Examples:

    domain.com/site1 needs domain.com/
    sub.domain.com/site1 needs sub.domain.com/
