I just got started with this, but I am having a little trouble understanding how this all works. Is there any way to manage all of the blogs from one place with one user instead of a new user for each blog?

No, the users on each site are independent of each other.

You can use the dashboard links plugin that will allow you to set up links to your other blogs and switch between them, although it requires you set it up on each blog you want to swtich between.
There is another plugin - the WP admin switcher plugin that reduces this set up time, however I have not been able to get this to work on hive sites yet - has anyone else tried this?
